Drama is the backbone of classic public domain cinema. The collection runs from silent melodramas of the 1910s through pre-Code social problem films of the early 1930s to no-budget independents of the 1960s. These are the films that carried the weight of serious storytelling before television took over that role. Many are forgotten today because they were never preserved or reissued, but the best of them hold up as well as anything from the same era that did survive in circulation.
