Crime Films

Crime films in the public domain cover gangster pictures, noir-adjacent thrillers, and police procedurals from the studio B-movie era. The genre was a natural fit for low-budget production because it did not require expensive sets or effects. A lot of what is here came from Poverty Row studios that turned out crime pictures on two-week shooting schedules. The best of them, particularly the pre-Code gangster films, are lean and brutal in a way the Code-era remakes could not match.
