Min and Bill

Marie Dressler won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min, the hard-boiled proprietress of a waterfront hotel who has raised the foundling Nancy (Dorothy Jordan) as her own. Wallace Beery co-stars as Bill, the boozy fisherman who lives at the inn and is Min's sometime suitor. When Nancy's disreputable birth mother Bella (Marjorie Rambeau) reappears to reclaim the girl, Min must make painful sacrifices to protect the child's future. Directed by George W. Hill for MGM and adapted by Frances Marion from Lorna Moon's novel *Dark Star*, the film was a runaway hit that cemented the late-blooming Dressler as one of Hollywood's most beloved stars. Published in 1930, the film entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 2026.
