Canadian-American stage and film actress, born in 1868. A veteran of Broadway and vaudeville, she became one of Hollywood's most beloved stars in the early sound era. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for *Min and Bill* (1930) and was one of the top box-office draws of the early 1930s, co-starring with Wallace Beery in several films including *Tugboat Annie* (1933) and *Dinner at Eight* (1933). She died in 1934.
