American film studio, commonly known as MGM, formed in 1924 by the merger of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Productions. Under production chief Irving Thalberg, MGM became the most prestigious studio of Hollywood's golden age, known for its polished productions and stable of stars. It produced and distributed Royal Wedding (1951) and many of the era's great musicals. The studio's lion logo is one of the most recognized in film.
