A Fool There Was

A Fool There Was is a 1915 silent drama that made Theda Bara a star and coined the word "vamp." Produced and distributed by the Fox Film Corporation and directed by Frank Powell, it is based on the play by Porter Emerson Browne, itself inspired by Rudyard Kipling's poem "The Vampire." Bara plays an unnamed femme fatale who sets her sights on a successful diplomat and husband (Edward Jose) and methodically destroys his career, his family, and his life. The film was a sensational hit, and Bara's image as the exotic, predatory "vampire" woman shaped Hollywood notions of screen sexuality for a decade. As a 1915 release it is securely in the public domain.
