L'Âge d'Or

The second collaboration between Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, and one of the first sound films made in France. A man and a woman are repeatedly drawn together and torn apart by the hypocrisies of bourgeois society and the Catholic Church, in a series of incidents that range from the absurd to the blasphemous. The film scandalized Paris on its release in 1930; members of the Ligue des Patriotes threw ink at the screen and assaulted audience members, and the film was banned in France for nearly fifty years. Its mixture of deadpan comedy, religious provocation, and dream logic made it a foundational text of surrealist cinema. Published in 1930, it entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 2026.
