Spanish filmmaker, born in 1900. One of the founding figures of surrealist cinema, he made his debut with Un Chien Andalou (1929), co-written with Salvador Dalí, and followed it with L'Âge d'Or (1930), which scandalized Paris and was banned for decades. He worked in Spain, Mexico, and France across a long career, directing Los Olvidados (1950), Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962), and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He died in 1983.
