French actor, born in 1887. A familiar face in French cinema from the silent era through the 1960s, he often played rough, working-class, or villainous characters. He is best known to international audiences as the enraged protagonist of Luis Buñuel's L'Âge d'Or (1930) and as the gangster Fred in René Clair's Under the Roofs of Paris (1930). He appeared in more than 100 films, including works by Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné. He died in 1972.
