King of Jazz

A lavish two-color Technicolor revue built around bandleader Paul Whiteman, then billed as the "King of Jazz." Stage veteran John Murray Anderson transferred his flair for spectacle to the screen with a parade of musical numbers, comedy sketches, and dance routines. The film is notable as the feature debut of Bing Crosby, who appears with the Rhythm Boys vocal trio, and for its ambitious staging of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which Whiteman had premiered in 1924. The two-color Technicolor gives the whole thing a pastel dreaminess that is part of its charm. Published in 1930, the film entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 2026.
