American bandleader, born in 1890. Billed as the "King of Jazz," he led one of the most popular dance orchestras of the 1920s and 1930s. He commissioned and premiered George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in 1924. He starred as himself in the Technicolor revue King of Jazz (1930), which showcased his band and its singers, including a young Bing Crosby. He continued leading bands on radio and television into the 1950s. He died in 1967.
