Doughboys

Buster Keaton's most successful sound picture, directed by Edward Sedgwick for MGM. Keaton plays Elmer J. Butts, a wealthy young man who accidentally enlists in the army during World War I after trying to follow his girlfriend's brother into the service. Through a series of mix-ups, the hapless millionaire finds himself in the trenches of France, where his ineptitude becomes an asset. The film was Keaton's biggest box office success of the sound era, though by his own account he had minimal creative control—the gags were largely devised by Sedgwick and the MGM story department. Still, Keaton's physical comedy shines through, particularly in a memorable sequence where he disguises himself as a tree. The film is in the public domain.
