The Pay-Off

A pre-Code crime drama directed by and starring Lowell Sherman, based on the 1927 play Crime by Samuel Shipman and John B. Hymer. Sherman plays Gene Fenmore, a gang boss who takes pity on a young couple robbed by one of his thugs (Hugh Trevor) and brings them under his protection. When the resentful thug is killed in a botched robbery, the police focus their investigation on the innocent couple. Marian Nixon co-stars as Nancy. The film entered the public domain in 1958 when its copyright was not renewed.
