In the Land of the Head Hunters

The first feature-length film with an entirely Indigenous cast, depicting the world of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples of British Columbia's Central Coast. Written and directed by photographer Edward S. Curtis, the film blends authentic representations of Kwakwaka'wakw culture with a melodramatic narrative of love, war, and sorcery. A landmark of early cinema, restored and re-edited in the 1970s as In the Land of the War Canoes. The film entered the public domain through non-renewal.
