American cartoonist and animation pioneer, born Zenas Winsor McCay in 1867. Best known for the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland and for some of the earliest hand-drawn animated films, including Little Nemo (1911), Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), and The Sinking of the Lusitania (1918). McCay drew thousands of frames by hand for each film, working largely alone, and is widely regarded as the father of character animation.
