Swiss-born American film director known for his meticulous craftsmanship and long takes. He directed Ben-Hur (1959), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and Mrs. Miniver (1942). During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces and directed the documentary The Memphis Belle (1944), filming combat missions over Europe.
