American silent film actor, director, and producer (1864-1946) who was one of the first Western stars. Known for his gritty, realistic portrayals of cowboys and outlaws, Hart produced and starred in his own films through William S. Hart Productions, including The Cradle of Courage (1920). His films were distributed by Paramount Pictures through the Artcraft Pictures Corporation. After retiring from filmmaking in 1925, he lived quietly on his ranch in Newhall, California, which is now a museum.
