American actor, playwright, and stage manager, born in 1853. He originated the stage role of Sherlock Holmes in his 1899 adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, playing the detective over 1,300 times. His portrayal established many of Holmes's iconic elements, including the deerstalker hat and calabash pipe. Sherlock Holmes (1916) is the only surviving filmed record of his legendary performance. He died in 1937.
