American screenwriter and film director, born in 1876. The older brother of Cecil B. DeMille, he was a successful Broadway playwright before moving to Hollywood. He directed numerous silent films for Famous Players-Lasky and Paramount, specializing in sophisticated social dramas and comedies. His credits include *Miss Lulu Bett* (1921), based on Zona Gale's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. He died in 1955.
