William A. Wellman

American film director, born in 1896. Known as "Wild Bill" for his flamboyant personality and adventurous past as a World War I fighter pilot. He directed over 80 films including A Star Is Born (1937), The Public Enemy (1931), Wings (1927, the first Best Picture Oscar winner), and Nothing Sacred (1937). He died in 1975.
