American actor (1902-1978) whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Blacklisted in the early 1950s for his leftist politics, he appeared in Salt of the Earth (1954) as the sheriff. He later found renewed fame as Grandpa Walton on the CBS television series The Waltons (1972-1978).
