German stage and film actor. Born in 1884, Krauss was one of the most prominent actors of German Expressionist cinema. He played the sinister showman Dr. Caligari in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and took on multiple roles in other films of the era. His theatrical, intense style suited the expressionist movement. He died in 1959.
