American actor known for his comic roles and his hangdog face. He appeared in Charade (1963) early in his film career, playing a government agent. He won an Oscar for The Fortune Cookie (1966) and became famous for his partnership with Jack Lemmon in The Odd Couple (1968) and Grumpy Old Men (1993). He died in 2000.
