American actor, director, and screenwriter, born in 1891. One of Paramount's most popular leading men of the silent era, known for his athletic good looks and action roles. He starred in Cecil B. DeMille's Carmen (1915) and many other features. His career was cut short when he died in 1923 from complications related to a morphine addiction that began after an on-set injury.
