American actor known for his distinctive voice and his roles in horror films. Born in 1911, he started in theater and serious drama before finding his niche in horror with House of Wax (1953). His films include House on Haunted Hill (1959), The Pit and the Pendulum (1961), and The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971). He was also an art collector and a cookbook author. He died in 1993.
