Swedish film director and actor, born in 1879. Often credited as Victor Seastrom in his Hollywood films, he was the founding figure of Swedish narrative cinema, directing Ingeborg Holm (1913), The Outlaw and His Wife (1918), and The Phantom Carriage (1921). He came to Hollywood in the 1920s and directed Lillian Gish in The Scarlet Letter (1926) and The Wind (1928). He returned to Sweden and later acted for Ingmar Bergman, most memorably in Wild Strawberries (1957). He died in 1960.
