British-American film actor, born in 1886. A former boxer and soldier, he became a leading man at Fox, often playing brawling, hard-drinking men. He starred in John Ford's Hangman's House (1928) and The Informer (1935), the latter winning him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He became a fixture of Ford's later films, including Fort Apache (1948) and The Quiet Man (1952).
