British-born American film director, born in 1893. He began as an actor and assistant in silent comedies before directing shorts and features. He is best known for directing the Marx Brothers' second film, Animal Crackers (1930), adapting their stage show to the screen without losing the energy of their live act. He later moved into producing and screenwriting, sharing an Academy Award for the screenplay of Mrs. Miniver (1942). He died in 1966.
