American film director, cinematographer, and producer (1883-1949) who directed some of Hollywood's most iconic films, including The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind (both 1939). He began his career as a cinematographer during the silent era and directed Mantrap (1926) starring Clara Bow, as well as Captains Courageous (1937) and Treasure Island (1934). Known for his versatility across genres, Fleming was one of MGM's most reliable directors.
