Tod Browning

American film director best known for Dracula (1931) and Freaks (1932). He began as a circus performer and brought that world to his films. His career peaked in the early sound era at Universal, where he directed Bela Lugosi in Dracula. Freaks, his most personal film, was so controversial it effectively ended his mainstream career. He died in 1962.
