American actor, born in 1879. He was one of the most popular leading men of the silent era, starring in films directed by Cecil B. DeMille including Manslaughter (1922) and Why Change Your Wife? (1920). He began in vaudeville and on Broadway before becoming a film star at Paramount. His career faded with the arrival of sound, and he retired in the early 1930s.
