American silent film producer, director, and studio executive, born in 1882. He pioneered the detailed continuity script and the factory-style production system, building Inceville and later supervising studios for Triangle and Paramount. He produced or supervised hundreds of films, including The Italian (1915) and many William S. Hart westerns. His death aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht in 1924 remains one of Hollywood's enduring mysteries.
