American vaudeville performer and comedian (1896-1937) who created and was the original leader of the Three Stooges. Healy hired Moe Howard, Shemp Howard, and Larry Fine as his "stooges"—comic foils who absorbed his on-stage abuse. They appeared together in Soup to Nuts (1930), the Stooges' first film, before breaking away from Healy to form their own act. Healy had a successful solo career in films at MGM but died mysteriously in 1937 at age 41.
