Sterling Hayden

American actor and sailor, born in 1916. A towering leading man in noir and westerns, known for his craggy face and laconic delivery. His films include The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Johnny Guitar (1954), and Suddenly (1954). He also worked as a real-life sea captain and later appeared in The Godfather (1972) and Dr. Strangelove (1964).
