Salka Viertel

Austrian actress and screenwriter, born Salomea Steuermann in 1889. A close friend and collaborator of Greta Garbo, she co-wrote several of Garbo's films and played Marthy Owens in the German-language version of Anna Christie (1930). Her home in Santa Monica was a gathering place for European émigré artists and writers fleeing the Nazis. She died in 1978.
