New Zealand-born American film director and actor. Born in 1889, Julian began as a stage and silent film actor before moving into directing. He is best known for directing The Phantom of the Opera (1925), starring Lon Chaney, though the production was troubled and other directors contributed uncredited work. He directed several other silent films before his career faded with the coming of sound. He died in 1943.
