American novelist, composer, and filmmaker, born 1872 in Lancaster, Missouri. A prolific writer of fiction and biography, he moved into pictures in the early 1920s and wrote, produced, and directed Souls for Sale (1923) from his own novel. He was one of the few novelists of his generation to direct a major feature himself. He is also remembered as the uncle of the industrialist Howard Hughes. He died in 1956.
