American silent film actor, comedian, and director (1887-1933), known as "Fatty" Arbuckle, one of the most popular stars of the silent era. He began at Keystone Studios under Mack Sennett, starring in comedies like Fatty Joins the Force (1913), before becoming a major star at Paramount. He mentored Buster Keaton and discovered Bob Hope. His career was derailed by a scandalous murder trial in 1921, from which he was ultimately acquitted, but the scandal effectively ended his career as a performer. He directed films under the pseudonym William Goodrich until his death.
