British actor, born in 1891. One of the great leading men of the silent and early sound eras, known for his smooth, eloquent voice (which made him an even bigger star after the arrival of sound) and his debonair screen presence. He appeared in Stella Dallas (1925), Lady Windermere's Fan (1925), and later won an Academy Award for A Double Life (1947). His career spanned more than 40 years and included some of the most popular films of his era.
