West directed The Bat (1926) and its sound remake The Bat Whispers (1930), both based on the Broadway play by Mary Roberts Rinehart. His use of a masked vigilante and a bat signal influenced Bob Kane's creation of Batman. West's career ended in the early 1930s amid personal and legal troubles.
