American screenwriter, director, and actor (1934-2024) who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Chinatown (1974). He began his career acting in Roger Corman films under the pseudonym Edward Wain, appearing in Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961) and The Last Woman on Earth (1960), before becoming one of Hollywood's most celebrated screenwriters with credits including Bonnie and Clyde, Shampoo, and Mission: Impossible.
