American actor and director, born Henry Montgomery Jr. in 1904. A leading man at MGM in the 1930s, he played the privileged young man undone by prison in The Big House (1930) and the man who strays in The Divorcee (1930). He later directed films, including the experimental Lady in the Lake (1947), shot entirely from the protagonist's point of view. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild and a political adviser to President Eisenhower. He died in 1981.
