Robert J. Flaherty

American filmmaker regarded as the father of documentary film. A former explorer and prospector, he spent years living with the Inuit of Hudson Bay before making Nanook of the North (1922), the first feature-length documentary. He went on to direct Moana (1926), Man of Aran (1934), and the Louisiana Story (1948).
