American actor, born in 1895. A major star of late silent and early sound cinema, he was discovered by D.W. Griffith and starred in Broken Blossoms (1919). He was nominated for the first Academy Award for Best Actor for The Noose (1928) and The Patent Leather Kid (1927). He plays the lead, ace pilot Dick Courtney, in Howard Hawks' The Dawn Patrol (1930). His career declined in the 1930s and he retired from acting after serving in World War II. He died in 1963.
