French stage and screen actress, born in 1892. She is remembered for a single film role: Joan of Arc in Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928). Dreyer cast her after seeing her in a Paris theater and shot her almost entirely in close-up. She made no other major film appearances and her later life is poorly documented. Her performance in that one film is routinely cited among the greatest in cinema.
