American character actor with a career spanning the silent and sound eras, born in 1887. He played a remarkable variety of roles for Cecil B. DeMille, including Charles VII in Joan the Woman (1916), and later formed a popular comedy team with Wallace Beery at MGM. He worked steadily into the 1960s. He died in 1971.
