American actor, dancer, and producer, born in 1908. A pioneering African American filmmaker, he co-founded Randol-Cooper Productions to produce pictures for Black audiences. He co-produced, co-directed, and starred in Dark Manhattan (1937), reimagining the Hollywood gangster film through a Black lens. He later became known as the master of ceremonies at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. He died in 1992.
