American stage and film actor, born in 1895. Born Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund to a family of Yiddish theatre performers, he became one of Hollywood's most respected dramatic actors, known for his transformations in biographical roles including The Story of Louis Pasteur and The Life of Emile Zola. He starred in Angel on My Shoulder (1946) as a gangster given a second chance by the Devil. He died in 1967.
