Paul Leni

German film director and a key figure in the Expressionist movement. Born in 1885, Leni began his career in German theater and film before moving to Hollywood in 1927. His few American films, including The Cat and the Canary (1927) and The Man Who Laughs (1928), blended German Expressionist visual style with Hollywood storytelling and helped establish the "old dark house" genre. He died of sepsis in 1929 at the age of 44, cutting short a promising Hollywood career.
