American film director (1895–1946) who made his name on Poverty Row westerns and action pictures in the early sound era, directing Hoot Gibson and Buck Jones vehicles for independent studios. He later became one of Hollywood's busiest second-unit directors, staging location and action sequences for major productions including Gone with the Wind (1939) and Duel in the Sun (1946).
